Case Study One
adapted from Learning from Experience, "Developing Portraits of Practice"

Act Three

Your team has worked diligently through some interesting issues regarding eportfolios. To date, you have addressed the following:

  • Technological issues
  • Experiences with eportfolios and the creation of a project charter

You have spent time investigating software and meeting with some "technology specialists".

You have used Electronic Portfolios: Emerging Practises in Student, Faculty and Institutional Learning as a guide, and participated in several video conferences on the topics.

From this work you have identified other issues:
  • Student reflection on the content of eportfolio is critical
  • How much do students need to know about the technology?
  • There are possible limitations to eportfolios such as measuring psychomotor skills
  • How do we keep the contents of the eportfolio standard? Students may create inappropriate material.
  • How will learning for life ensure the eportfolio is student centered?
  • The eportfolio needs to be adapted to the course outcome, not the other way around.

You are in your office pondering these questions and points. You decide to choose one and work through it with a concept map.

Create a concept map which captures your experiences in this case study.

Making a case for the integration of an eportfolio program is a complicated process. There are many considerations and strategies to be considered and mapped.

  • Technology
  • Linkage to courses, competencies
  • Value to the organization, individual, and faculty
  • Standards
  • Ethics
